Exercise: Management & Leadership – Stage II

Have you worked through stage I of this exercise? If not, please take your time to finish stage I before coming back here.
If yes, let’s keep walking:
You collected about one hundred, maybe more key words and thoughts under the headlines Management and Leadership.
A few questions to answer for yourself:
- For which one was it easier to find associations?
- Does one of the headlines have more key words? If yes, why?
- Which of the headlines has more negative or positive associations? Is one good and the other one bad, or does seem comfortable and the other seems annoying to you?
- Which key words were hard to associate to one or the other category?
- Do your personal strengths and learning fields show up on the list
The answers to these or related thoughts are also worth writing down.

Let me just add a few thoughts from my perspective:
- Management and Leadership are not opponents.
- In your role, you most likely cover one AND the other.
- Specific situations may require Management OR Leadership.
- Even if you have a balanced list, usually 80% of your day is dominated by your Management role.
From now on we focus on the page(s) with your notes on Leadership.
Give this a few more days to review, if your list covers your personal values, the things you admire in strong leaders, the attributes you aspire to build up?
Ok, I admit, I nudge you here a bit into a direction. Maybe I add just one possible differentiation:
Leadership is about doing the right things,
Management is about doing the things right
Again, give this a few more days to let sink in and add further buzz words to your Leadership pages before you move on to stage III.
