Leadership Principles

Lead like a Farmer

  • In Leadership Principles

You may have run across the “Think like a Farmer” meme. Let’s take “thinking” one step further.

Farming has many synonyms like gardening, nursing, cultivating, growing, seeding and many more. And many of these words can be associated to leadership as well.

So thinking like a farmer can actually mean leading like a farmer with similar principles:

  • don’t shout at the crops
  • pulling on the crop will not make it grow faster
  • don’t blame the crop for not growing fast enough
  • don’t uproot crops before they’ve had a chance to grow
  • choose the best plants for the soil
  • irrigate and fertilise
  • remove weeds
  • protect crops from pests
  • think and act in seasons

And remember, you will have good seasons and bad seasons. You can’t control the weather, but be prepared for it
